Every time I upgrade (trying to get a version without all of the bugs of the current version), I go through hell.  I make software for a living.  I know bugs when I see them.

Now that I've wasted an hour and a half on what should have been a 10-minute upgrade, how do I get WhosOn 5 to ask me about importing my version 4 settings again?  One of the many bugs in the installer screwed me out of importing.

Of course every time I come here to ask for help, the stupid forum makes me re-register, because my account cannot be found!

So frigging annoyed and wanting my time back,
Lee

Hi Lee

You press the big circle button in the top left, and click "Import V4 Settings"   I'll check on your user profile to see if I can find out what is wrong with the user accounts.

Sorry for the delay.

Thanks, Daniel, but I can no longer get to any buttons, because I uninstalled WhosOn.  Well, I got the illusion of an uninstall.  (Uninstalling sucks, too.)  Upon re-installing, the experience is completely different, because WhosOn tries to be so helpful as to keep all of my settings.  If you want to be helpful, prompt me about such things.  How do I actually get rid of everything?  I want a truly clean install of V5 now that I've tried to remove it.

I'm ready to give this one more try.  If I run into more bugs, I'd just like to get a refund.

, Lee

Hi Lee

V5 installer doesn't install any settings - its a blank install immediately regardless of whether you have a current V4 or not, then the import action imports from the WhosOnV4 folder listed below.

If you want to remove *all* the settings from both v4 and v5,
delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Parker Software\WhosOnV4  or \WhosOnV5 folders
 (in C:\ProgramData\Parker Software on Vista / 2008)
respectively
(this doesn't remove your license key + database settings - if you want to remove them, delete from the registry HKEY_LocalMachine/Software/Parkersoft/WhosOn/4  or /5)

Then when you install v5 it will be completely blank.  The default username and password in this case is Admin with no password, and should be connecting to (local)

I never got a notification of your reply.  I guess there's a bug with that, too.

I manually cleaned up what your V5 so-called uninstaller left behind.  I ran into all of the same bugs during install.  I got V5 installed despite all the bugs.  I try to start the service and the app crashes.

One last effort, I try to install the client on another machine, and I get:
---------------------------
WhosOn Client
---------------------------
Error

Module C:\Program Files\WhosOn\PSLTabs.ocx failed to register.  HRESULT -2147467259.  Contact your support personnel.
---------------------------
Abort   Retry   Ignore
---------------------------

How do I go about getting a refund?

Sincerely disappointed,
Lee

Hi Lee

You didn't get a notification because in your forum settings "notify me of replies to posts" is set to no.

I'm not aware of all these bugs in the installer you go on about previously.   If you get error messages in the installer about OCX or DLLs then the service will not run.

Are you using all the latest builds of clients and server downloads?  What OS are you trying to install the server on to?

Contact the sales department for a refund.

How do you recommend I achieve "notify me of replies to posts" if the check box input does not work?  Bug!

Your lack of awareness of all the bugs does not make them any less frustrating.

Yes, v-e-r-y latest builds.  Sever = Windows Server 2008 Web Edition.  Client = XP Pro SP3.  Both have all of the very latest service packs and updates.

Now, when I relaunch the WhosOn Administrator (server) the default connection credentials don't work, so I'm locked out of trying to fix the broken thing.  I did not knowingly change any credentials.

Have I mentioned that this sucks?  I like WhosOn when it's working, but this is ridiculous.

Hi,

Did you do the import from v4? Or is it just the normal server = (local) user = Admin password blank one that isn't working?

You can see the settings at c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\parker software\whosonv5\settings.ini - - webusername / webpassword.

There is a setting in the profile about whether to notify of replies - that is the one I tend to use. I will test the other notification now.

I imported the site settings.  I got no indication that would overwrite the access credentials.  That path you gave does not exist in Windows Server 2008.  I searched the disk and found a Settings.ini in a V5 folder.  Here are the relevant entries:

WebUsername=Admin
WebPassword=

Yeah, that's what I was trying, but it does not work!  Bug.

Okay, I'm game, I'll try the Settings.ini in a V4 folder.  Hey, those credentials work.  What in the world?  My credentials for V5 are stored in the V4 settings?  Seriously?  This is a mess.

Now the server is magically working, despite crashing yesterday.  When will it crash again?  Who knows.

The WhosOn client on the server seems to work fine, but I don't need there.  The client on my remote machine, where I actually need it, is just a sea of blank whiteness.  How do I make the sites, which should be showing up, show up?
