When installing WhosOn on your server, you must make sure that it can make outbound connections through the required ports in your firewall.
The optimum installation for WhosOn uses 2 IP addresses on the server - one for the Gateway, and one for the Chat server. This will attempt to connect over the default http port (port 80) and the default https port (port 443), as well as the connection for the client (port 8011). WhosOn can also be configured to use a single IP address. In this case, you would also need to allow secondary http and https connections for the Gateway (the Chat server is served through IIS, which is why it uses port 80), on port 8080 and port 8443 by default, though these can be changed. Alternatively you can use FastCGI to use IIS for the Gateway, meaning that the Gateway can also use ports 80/443. For more information on that, see http://www.whoson.com/help/index.html?fastcgi_and_the_whoson_gateway.htm
